This is Gordon, happily married for 46 years and proud of his three children. He enjoyed driving holidays, catching up with friends interstate or following his footy team. He liked nothing better than to sit down with friends and share a glass or two of red.

Gordon was exposed to asbestos at his workplace in the 1970s when asbestos sheeting was removed without adequate protection for staff who were working at the time. He was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2013 and died 7 months later.

Mesothelioma in Australia

Two new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed every day in Australia, with one of the poorest survival rates of any cancer.

Over 700 Australians were diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2017—equating to 2 cases diagnosed per day—according to the latest data released today by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).

Lung cancer is a condition that can be caused not only by exposure to asbestos, but by other carcinogens, most notably cigarette smoke. Lung cancer is different from mesothelioma in this respect. Mesothelioma in Australia is only caused by exposure to asbestos.
